Cloacal swabs were taken from Adelie penguins at Cape Crozier and Cape Bird (2003-2004 season) and at Mandible Cirque (2004-2005 season) and from emperor penguins in McMurdo Sound (2003-2004 season) and Cape Washington (2004-2005 season). Cultures were made to determine whether various human and avian bacteria are present. Plasma collected from some of the birds was also tested for the presence of antibodies against viral disease. 270 birds were sampled: 2003-2004 Emperors = 7, Adelie = 138, 2004-2005 Empereors = 96, Adelie = 29
