Staphylococcus aureus is a common opportunistic pathogen and leading cause of hospital acquired infections. S. aureus is frequently isolated from patients with chronic lung infections, including being the primary pathogen infecting patients with cystic fibrosis. Its ability to form aggregates and biofilms has been implicated in antibiotic resistance and poor patient prognosis. This study uses a strain of S. aureus isolated from a patient with cystic fibrosis. Isolates were obtained from Dr. Timothy Starner at the University of Iowa.
