A Year of Slavery: Jornal do Commercio, 1840

This dataset features a complete transcription and associated extracted data from 6,540 classified advertisements about the sale, purchase, rental, and auction of enslaved persons and slave labor, as well as the flight or disappearance of slaves and Free Africans, published in the <em>Jornal do Commercio</em> over the course of 1840. Extracted data includes each advertisement's actual date of publication and imputed type (e.g., buying, selling, rental, flight); the name (when known), gender, age, and legal status of the enslaved, freed, or runaway person(s) referenced in the advertisement; the number of enslaved, freed, or runaway persons referenced; monetary valuation(s); the enslaved person's occupation, skills, and/or services referenced; the name of the person(s) or commercial house that placed the ad; and/or an address for the person(s) or commercial house that placed the advertisement.
