This dataset presents a collection of Metagenome-Assembled Genomes (MAGs) derived from shotgun metagenomic sequencing of water and sediment samples collected from two artificial lakes in the Gauteng Province of South Africa.Background:The study aimed to explore the microbial communities and their functional potentials within these man-made freshwater environments. Artificial lakes, often constructed for recreational, agricultural, or water storage purposes, can harbor unique microbial ecosystems influenced by anthropogenic activities and the surrounding environment.Dataset Contents:MAGs representing diverse taxonomic groups and potential functional roles.Potential Applications:Comparative analysis of microbial communities between natural and artificial aquatic environments.Insights into the functional potential of microbial communities in freshwater ecosystems.Baseline data for future monitoring and management of water quality in artificial lakes.Methods:Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed on extracted DNA from water and sediment samples.
