Envision: Cartographies of Risk in Lubbock / Visualizar: cartografías del riesgo en Lubbock

Envision is part of the outreach and educational strategy of the project titled "Improving Knowledge about NWS Forecaster Core Partner Needs for Reducing Vulnerability to Compound Threats in Landfalling Tropical Cyclones Amid Covid-19" (NOAA grant NA 210AR4590214), led by Jen Henderson (PI), Erik Nielsen (Co-PI), and Rodolfo Hernandez (researcher).
Envision emerges from the question of how to represent the history of a city through mapping social and environmental risks and hazards. On November 4 and 11, 2022, students of Estacado and Frenship High Schools in Lubbock (TX) participated in the workshop "Envision: Cartographies of Risk in Lubbock" (hereafter, Envision) to solve this challenging question with two different groups during a full-day journey consisting of a morning exploring the city Downtown, historical places, and an air quality lab on campus, followed by an afternoon of social cartography activities with digital and analog maps of the city. This journal is a pedagogical instrument resulting from this project that can be used to inspire other scholars and communities to take their own steps to produce social cartographies to understand social and environmental risks.
