Sturgeons (order: Acipenseriformes, infraclass: Chondrostei) are a very ancient group of fish with about 25 species, distributed in the Palearctic hemisphere, most of which are considered to be on the brink of extinction. The aim of this study is to produce for the first time EST sequences of a 120 chromosome sturgeon species Acipenser stellatus to the extent of the comparison with already available transcriptomes of sturgeon species with higher level of ploidy and for the identification of transcribed sequences and related markers (es. Microsatellite and SNPs).
