Long Hansen's Disease Center in Carville, Louisiana is presented by a local television station in Mobile, Alabama, WALA-TV. Residents of the Carville center are interviewed, as are Public Health Service officers and doctors and nurses who work there. A history of leprosy (an outdated term for Hansen's disease) is provided and its symptoms and effects are described. The program focuses particularly on the stigma and prejudice associated with the illness, even though it is not a terribly contagious disease. One woman who has no visible symptoms mentions that she tried living "on the outside," but prefers to be near her medical providers and other residents who understand her situation. The program closes with a discussion of the state of current research and the federal government's plans to close the Carville facility.
