Imperatriz Wharf and Municipal Square: analysis of a public space of the neoclassic carioca

ABSTRACT The Municipal Square in the old Valongo Wharf in Rio de Janeiro is a little-known work by Grandjean de Montigny. The French architect designed the facades that formed the architectural frame of the fountain commemorating the landing of Empress Teresa Cristina. This text aims to present the history of the project by Grandjean de Montigny and identify why the architectural ensemble of the square was considered as the monumental space of the city in the 19th century.
