Spider silks are the toughest known biomaterials, yet are extensible and virtually invisible to the immune system, and thus have revolutionary potential for medicine and industry. The golden orb-weaver spider, Nephila clavipes, produces a diverse repertoire of silks and is extensively studied for understanding silk biology. We present here the first annotated genome for any orb-weaving spider. We also provide 17 de novo assembled transcriptomes from a range of tissues including individual silk glands, as well as 28 sequences from the spidroin gene family assembled from long single molecule real-time sequencing reads.
