Two spin crossover complexes, noted as 1-Λ (R,R) and 1-Δ (S,S), comprising a cationic monomeric MnIII unit associated with a chiral spiroborate anion have been fully characterized (X-Ray diffraction, IR, UV solution, CD solution, SQUID magnetometry), and have crystallized in the high symmetry and rare space group I422. The proposed work will probe the XNCD, XMCD and XMchiD response on both enantiomers to examine (i) the effect of uncoupling the spins and switching from the S = 1 to S = 2 state on warming with concomitant injection of a pseudo Jahn-Teller distortion and (ii) the effect of applying a magnetic field along the 4-fold axis in the different spin states. The latter experiment is designed to detect changes in the 42’2’ magnetic group over the spin state switching and will be detectable by XMCD and XmchiD.
