The study of geometric magnetic frustration in solid state materials has led to the discovery of exotic magnetic ground states. Some frustrated 3D lattices host quasiparticle excitations that are suitable for applications in quantum information science. One such frustrated 3D lattice is the pyrochlore lattice. The effects of cation crystal disorder in pyrochlore lattices have been studied previously and it has been found that disorder suppresses desired quantum magnetic ground states. However, a recent study exploring anion disorder in a so-called oxynitride pyrochlore has shown that anion disorder can promote desired quantum properties. Further exploration of such phenomena in oxynitrides is needed. The proposed material Yb2Ta2O5N2 provides an excellent system for this study where high-quality single crystals with anion disorder can be synthesized.
