To address how the S. cerevisiae cells expressing K. lactis FAD2 and FAD3 fatty acid desaturase genes can grow better under the alkaline pH condition, we examined its genome-wide gene expression profiles using S. cerevisiae oligonucleotide microarrays. Expression profiles were examined under two conditions. One is the influence of FAD2 and FAD3 expression in the absence of alkaline stress to assess the constitutive effect of PUFAs on gene expression. The other one is the comparison before and after the addition of K2HPO4 in order to assess the influence of PUFAs on the response to the alkaline stress immediately after the application of the stimulus.
