Strepsiptera are endopterygote insects with highly derived morphology and life history. This has made inferring their phylogenetic relationships one of the most persistent problems in entomology (The Strepsiptera problem). We present the draft-genome of a newly discovered Strepsiptera of the, in many aspects, plesiomorphic family Mengenillidae from the Tunisian Sahara. The aim of the genome sequencing was; (1) to infer the phylogenetic relationship of Strepsiptera to other Endopterygota, (2) to provide the most detailed description of a newly discovered insect species to date that includes both comprehensive morphological and molecular data, and (3) to assess problems associated with sequencing a veritable non-model organism.
