Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation at St Margaret's Church, Maldon Road, Woodham Mortimer, Essex, September 2023

This collection contains text documents, images, vector graphics (CAD), and site records from an archaeological evaluation undertaken by Colchester Archaeological Trust on land opposite St Margaret's Church, Maldon Road, Woodham Mortimer, Essex in September 2023. The evaluation, comprising twenty trial trenches, was carried out ahead of the proposed construction of a new crematorium. Although the site lies on the southwestern fringe of the historic town of Maldon, only three archaeological features were recorded: a medieval or post-medieval ditch, an undated post-hole, and a pit containing sherds of possible Late Bronze Age pottery. The latter feature represents the first evidence of prehistoric activity in the area and may indicate the presence of a previously unknown prehistoric settlement.
