Red-eared slider turtles (Trachemys scripta elegans) are capable of surviving prolonged periods of anoxia. To do this, they enter a hypometabolic state through the coordinated use of various molecular mechanisms including microRNA-mediated gene regulation. microRNAs are known to regulate translation by targeting mRNA for degradation or temporary storage. Next-generation sequencing was used to assess changes in microRNA expression in the liver of control and anoxic Trachemys scripta elegans.
