Circumference, Canopy Coverage and Distance Between Trees On York University Campus Woodlot

Methods: The transect was 25 meters long and placed in a straight line through the middle of a woodlot. The circumference of the tree was measured at chest height using measuring tape and only on adult trees; ones that were at least twice normal human height. The distance to the closest adult tree was also measured at chest height on both trees. A "sapling" was defined as a tree of about 6 feet tall or shorter, but had to be of the same species as the adult tree that was distanced from it. If no sapling of the same species was found within 4 meters of the adult tree then "none" describes no sapling in the vicinity. Canopy cover percentage was done by looking up from the base of the tree and estimating how much of the foliage and branches were blocking the sky.
