Abell 548 is the core of a nearby supercluster with interesting dynamicalfeatures where we can study the processes during the assembly of a massivecluster in much detail. While two individual subclusters in this complex systemhave been observed with XMM-Newton the most massive cluster and itssurroundings in the heart of this supercluster have not been investigated indetail in X-rays. Here we propose an observation of this core region to studythe processes at work when massive clusters form complemented by our ongoingoptical spectroscopic survey project. Besides reconstructing the assemblygeometry we are in particular interested to observe when and how theintercluster medium is heated in the merging process. [truncated!
