The Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical hosts a collection of horseflies (Order Diptera, Family Tabanidae) collected by J. A. Travassos Santos Dias and other researchers, mainly in Portugal and during several expeditions to Angola, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe in the decades of 1940 to 1980. The collection consists of 1319 specimens and includes type specimens of species described by Travassos Santos Dias, as well as species with little distribution data available online.
