资源简介:
Type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension
frequently coexist and their combination provides additive increases in the
risk impairment of cognitive processes. This
study proposes to address these areas and its aims are (1) to test whether
cognitive impairments are different in type 2 diabetes mellitus with and
without hypertension and different from hypertension only compared to healthy
control groups and whether diabetes with hypertension have the worst cognitive
impairment among these tested groups; (2) to
determine the association between potentially risk factors (diabetes duration,
glycemic control, hypertension duration, systolic blood pressure and diastolic
blood pressure) and cognitive decrements.
The study sample consists of 143 participants (36 participants with
type 2 diabetes, 30 participants with hypertension, 33
participants with comorbid type 2 diabetes and hypertension and the control group consists of 43 healthy
adults). All participants were assessed with a psychometric test memory using the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised.
The results of this study support the
hypothesis that there is a connection between hypertension and cognitive
dysfunction, but this study does not support the hypothesis that there is a
link between diabetes and cognitive dysfunctions. Cognitive deficits in verbal
memory appear to be more pronounced in individuals who have both diseases,
which means that diabetes can amplify the effect of other comorbid conditions,
like hypertension, or vice versa. In case of attention the cognitive deficits are
more pronounced in the hypertension group than in the comorbid disease group and
in case of delayed memory the cognitive deficits are pronounced equally.
The
cumulative effects of high blood pleasure and high glucose level, can more
strongly explain the cognitive decrements relative to those living with only one
or neither of the conditions in case of verbal and delayed memory only.
