THE USE OF CONJUNCTIONS IN THE CHINESE LANGUAGE

This article explores the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic roles of conjunctions in Modern Standard Chinese. As an analytical language, Chinese lacks inflectional morphology, making conjunctions essential for structuring relationships between words, phrases, and clauses. The study presents a comprehensive classification of Chinese conjunctions into coordinating and subordinating types, analyzing their forms, meanings, and functions. It also examines correlative conjunctions and compound patterns frequently used in formal and informal contexts. Special attention is given to the discourse functions of conjunctions, their role in maintaining textual cohesion, and their pedagogical implications for learners of Chinese as a second or foreign language.
