The objective of our study was to document the structure of human gut bacterial communities and determine changes postmortem. Gut microflora were repeatedly sampled from the caeca of cadavers as they decayed under natural environmental conditions at the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility. 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing was used to reveal community structure and taxonomic composition.
