Sediment samples were collected at three different volcanic edifices, Hook Ridge (1090 m depth), The Axe (520 m) and Three Sisters (1188 m), and near the subaerial volcano Bridgeman Island (707 m). Our study provides the first evidence for the presence of a chemosynthesis-based microbial community in the hydrothermally influenced sediments at Hook Ridge.
