Land plants evolved from freshwater green algae approximately 470 million years ago, by acquiring several traits that enabled them to live on dry land. One of these traits is the production of spores, which is essentially a single living plant cell encased in one of the most resilient polymers made in nature, sporopollenin. Today, every plant that lives on land still produces spores, or their evolutionary derivatives, pollen grains. This thesis looks at the genes controlling spore formation and sporopollenin production in a liverwort, Marchantia polymorpha, in an attempt to understand how the process of spore formation evolved.
