Ruminants comprise highly successful mammalian taxa, with striking morphological innovations such as the rumen and bony headgear. Many studies have shown that species-specific or lineage-specific genes (new genes) play important roles in phenotypic evolution of species. In this study using stringent pipeline and newly assembled high-quality genomes of two essential branches of lesser mouse-deer and forest musk deer and other released high-quality genomes, we identified a comprehensive ruminant-specific genes set.
