Radioresistant tumours are still a challenge for conventional radiation therapy. We have implemented a new radiation therapy technique, called mini-GRID therapy, at a flattening free filter accelerator. Mini-GRID employs very narrow beamlets (< 2 mm2) spaced by several millimetres and resulting in heterogeneous dose distributions. Preclinical experiments show that mini-GRID allows the use of high peak doses: 42 Gy in one fraction, a factor more than twice higher than the peak doses generally employed in conventional GRID therapy (20 Gy peak dose). This could enable the use of higher and potentially curative doses in radioresistant tumours.
