Tritrichomonas foetus is studied not only for its veterinary importance, but also because of its particular cell structure. This parasite has several unusual characteristics, including cellular components called hydrogenosomes, which are an anaerobic form of modified mitochondria that generate hydrogen and ATP, a well-developed Golgi complex that likely indicates a significant role of this organelle. In addition, T. foetus presents many different cytoskeleton the structures such as costa, which is a large striated fibre and suprakinetosomal and infrakinetosomal bodies that protein composition is unknown. Thus, the study of the genome of the T. foetus helps to elucidate many issues about the biology of this parasite.
