Failure analysis of Pipe 2 abstrak

The fact is shown that pitting attack has occurred on installation of the pipe 2 inch. This pipe has a material of SS 316 L. The pit initiation occurs as described at the analysis. The pitting attack occurs starting from the outer surface and penetrated through the thickness of pipe to the inner surface. The material used is already appropriate with the standard of SS 316 L, but the outer surface of the pipe is left without coating protection. It can be concluded that the pipe material SS 316 L which is used without any coating protection only can survive from the pitting attack for 3 years at a sea environment. To make it longer life it should be done some improvement. That is the protection of the pipe or material selection which is superior to resist the pitting attack or it can be done the anodic or cathodic protection along the pipe line.
