Groundwater wells are critical infrastructure that supports groundwater monitoring, extraction, and utilization, and hold great significance for the environment, water resource security, and economic development. Although their importance cannot be overlooked, the United States still lacks a unified database for collecting and standardizing information on the characteristics and locations of groundwater wells across the entire country. To fill this gap, we have developed a comprehensive groundwater well record database that aggregates data from state and federal agencies, and named it the United States Groundwater Well Database (USGWD). This database is available in both tabular and vector point formats, containing over 14.2 million groundwater well records. It includes attributes such as well purpose, location, depth, and water withdrawal capacity, with well construction dates spanning from 1763 to 2023. We conducted strict cross-validation on the data to ensure its accuracy. USGWD is a vital data resource that advances our understanding of groundwater access and management practices across different regions and sectors in the United States.
