These show 2 spike plots made by recording entorhinal grid cells as rats explored a 1.2m square arena. The grey lines represent the path of the rat and the black dots are the action potentials emitted by the cell. The spikes are spatially clustered, and the even spacing between these clusters indicates operation of a distance- and direction-measuring process
