We have genomic and experimental evidence that a novel isolate recovered from the Taupo Volcanic zone can produce Cyanophycin (CGP) and Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), which have potential applications in green biotechnology. Additionally, the strain can fix nitrogen. This isolate is a moderate thermophile, which has potential advantages in an industrial setting including increased enzymatic activity and reduced contamination. We have not yet undertaken a rigorous phylogenetic analysis, however some preliminary work suggests this bacteria might be a divergent Thauera, which is a genus of the family Rhodocyclaceae.
