M&A in High-Tech Industries (2000 – 2025)

For this study, a sample of 76 significant mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in the high-tech industry was selected, spanning the period from 2000 to 2025. This comprehensive selection encompasses various sub-sectors, including computer hardware/semiconductors, consumer electronics, software, internet services, and telecommunications. Detailed M&A information, such as deal values and strategic rationales, was primarily collected from secondary sources, with a strong emphasis on the official websites of the acquiring firms. This approach to data collection through official corporate websites is a well-established and common practice in M&A research. To ensure data accuracy and reliability, all collected M&A details underwent a rigorous verification process using multiple independent sources. Any M&A case for which details could not be sufficiently verified was excluded from further analysis, resulting in a final sample size of N=77. This study employs Content Analysis (also known as textual analysis) as its primary research methodology, a technique widely recognized and commonly utilized in M&A studies. Content analysis is defined as "any technique of making inferences by objectively and systematically identifying specified characteristics of messages”. This method provides a robust framework for systematically collecting and analysing both qualitative and quantitative data from verbal, print, and electronic sources, thereby allowing for comprehensive insights into the M&A landscape of the high-tech industry.
