VPRS 6905 Inward Registered and Unregistered Correspondence, Lands

This series consists of correspondence either as single letters or with packets of enclosures previously sent from Melbourne and being returned, received from the Colonial Secretary in Sydney. Much of the correspondence is stamped as being Orders-in-Council Port Phillip. This would suggest that these were matters which had to be ruled upon by the Governor-in-Council before actions could proceed.Matters dealt with in the correspondence include the receipt of survey reports and discussion regarding them including a copy of the report on the Trigonometrical Survey of Gipps Land 1850. Included also is a copy of the 1840 land regulations as well as correspondence concerning land sales and the granting of licences for the occupation of land and matters concerning the issuing of title deeds (or Crown grants) for the land.Melbourne registration details are shown in red ink and consist of the registration number and a summary of the content of the correspondence. Also shown are registration numbers in black which are quite likely the outwards correspondence reference numbers for the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales. Registration details for most of the correspondence in this series may be found in VPRS 18 Registers of Inwards Correspondence although some has only the Sydney reference numbers. Outward Correspondence relating to these matters might be able to be found in VPRS 45 Draft Letter Books or in VPRS 16 Outward Letter Books, Local and Sydney.Correspondence in the P3 consignment was returned to PROV custody in May 2006.This correspondence had passed to the custody of VA 538 Department of Crown Lands and Survey.
