3. South Africa, Cape Town: District 6 21st c

Today, decades after the fall of Apartheid, the site remains a visible scar on the landscape. The majority of the district lies undeveloped; and the structures that do exist simply fragment the area and it's original urban fabric. Several plans for the urban redevelopment of the site have been proposed since the early 90s. These run the gamut from ultra gentrification and disneyfication to land restitution and memorial park proposals. The land is prime real estate, situated close to the city center – between the mountain and the bay. A large proportion of the 60,000 original District Six residents are actively trying to reclaim their land and live in District Six once again. Today only 139 homes have been built for those original residents.
