Synthetic Establishment Dataset for Gothenburg, Sweden

This dataset provides a synthetic representation of establishments within Gothenburg municipality, Sweden. It was developed to support urban freight, city logistics, and transportation modelling applications, providing fine-grained spatial information about establishments. The dataset contains approximately 38,000 synthetic establishments. Each establishment is described by its sector, number of employees, and geographical location. The represented sectors include: accommodation food services healthcare manufacturing offices public services and education retail non-perishable retail perishable wholesale The dataset was constructed using four main data sources:(i) grid-based employment data at 250 m resolution,(ii) postal code boundaries,(iii) industry-level establishment and employment statistics at the postal code level, and(iv) OpenStreetMap points of interest, which were used to assign plausible establishment locations. The synthetic establishment data is designed to be internally consistent. Aggregating establishments across space reproduces postal-code-level statistics, while aggregating across industries reproduces grid-level employment totals, with only minor numerical differences caused by rounding. The dataset was developed as part of a modelling framework for simulating last-mile parcel deliveries. In this framework, the synthetic establishments are used to estimate establishment-level parcel demand and to represent business receivers within the urban freight system. When combined with a synthetic population, the dataset enables a more comprehensive representation of parcel receivers, including both private individuals and establishments. The dataset can be used in applications related to urban freight modelling, parcel demand estimation, last-mile delivery simulation, spatial analysis, and city logistics planning.
