The sampling campaign was performed at Hebei University of Engineering (36.57°N, 114.50°E) in Handan. This site, located on the southeast edge of the urban area and surrounded by school and residential areas, is approximately 300 m northern of South Ring Road and 400 m northeast of Handan Highway. There were several low-rise buildings around the sampling site, and no large point sources were found nearby. A lab-assembled sampler with four channels was placed on the roof of a four-story building on campus, approximately 12 m above the ground. From 6 to 31 December 2015, PM1.0 and PM2.5 were simultaneously collected on quartz (0.2 μm pore size) and Teflon filters with 47 mm diameters at an 8.35 L min-1 flow rate for each channel from 8:00 am to 7:30 am the next day. Before sampling, the quartz filters were heated at 450°C for 8 h to remove impurities. The quartz and Teflon filters were stored at -20°C after sampling. In total, 52 quartz-filter samples, 52 Teflon-filter samples and 4 blank samples (2 quartz filters and 2 Teflon filters) were collected during the sampling campaign. The blank samples were used to eliminate the effect of background values originating from the filters. The quartz filters were utilized for WSII, OC and EC analysis, and the Teflon filters were utilized for mass determination of particulate matter and trace elemental analysis.
