Phloem development and metabolomic profiles in Pinus sylvestris and Juniperus communis based on crown transparency

This dataset accompanies a study investigating how crown transparency (CT), an indicator of declining tree vitality, influences secondary phloem development and metabolism in drought-prone forests of the Eastern Alps (Tyrol, Austria). Seasonal phloem phenology was monitored in Pinus sylvestris L. and Juniperus communis L. throughout the 2024 growing season using repeated microcore sampling and quantitative anatomical analyses. In addition, untargeted GC–MS metabolomic profiling of secondary phloem tissue was performed in P. sylvestris in 2025. The data file IDdata_microcores_metabolites.xlsx contains the raw measurements including tree characteristics (age, height, stem diameter), intra-annual phloem development (cell counts and developmental timing), cell production dynamics, phenological timing, annual xylem and phloem increment widths (all recorded in 2024), and stem phloem metabolite profiles (measured in 2025). Cell counts and tissue increment widths are reported as mean values based on observations from three radial rows per sample.
