Dataset for "Predictors of Militarisation 2011–2021"

This dataset supports the analysis presented in the study examining the predictors of militarisation in nation-states’ coercive apparatuses between 2011 and 2021. The data are compiled from publicly available sources and standardised for cross-national comparability. The final dataset consists of a selection of relevant variables extracted from a broader set of datasets. Its core structure is based on the QoG Standard Time-Series Dataset (January 2024 edition) developed by the Quality of Government Institute at the University of Gothenburg (Teorell et al., 2024). This foundation was further enriched with indicators from multiple sources, including the World Bank, the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC), the World Inequality Database (WID), and the START Global Terrorism Database. Measures of militarisation were derived from principal component scores developed in previous work based on BICC data and World Bank. Finally, all data sources were harmonised using ISO3 country codes and aligned by year, covering the period from 2010 to 2021. As a result I obtain a country year panel data with 161 countries for 11 years.
