Context: The proliferation of conversational agents, particularly
text-based chatbots, has enabled users to engage with machines us-
ing natural language. Problem: The increasing demand for chatbots
has posed challenges in creating and deploying these conversa-
tional agents across diverse platforms, resulting in the need for
costly adaptations. Solution: To address this issue, we conducted
a comprehensive review of grey literature to identify a collection
of tools that support the development of platform-independent
chatbots using Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs). IS Theory: Not
applicable. Method: This research aimed to compile a list of tools
and DSLs suitable for building platform-independent chatbots and
involved a thorough review of grey literature, coupled with a quali-
tative analysis of primary studies. Results: Following our research
efforts, we uncovered 14 tools and 10 DSLs designed to facilitate
the construction of platform-independent chatbots. Contributions
and Impact in the IS area: This study provides a comprehensive
characterization of the state-of-the-art tools and DSLs available to
support the creation of platform-independent chatbots.
