An experimental study using a butane heater and open wood fire in partially- and fully-sealed spaces. Carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations and thermal conditions were recorded in four test scenarios.
A butane heater gives rise to negligible CO concentrations when in a partially ventilated space, although these concentrations rose slowly when the space was sealed. Small open wood fires afford peak CO concentrations of 653 ppm and 532 ppm. Both scenarios had extended periods where CO concentrations exceeded 400 ppm.
We used a simplified Euler method, based on measured CO concentrations and physiological constants, to model carboxyhaemoglobin (HbCO) dynamics and evaluate physiological impacts of exposure. Our model predicted peak HbCO levels could exceed 11%, at which we expect neurobehavioral and cognitive changes. Projections of 8 h exposure at 400 ppm resulted in HbCO of 26.1% and 24.8%.
