Airborne_Color_IR_Videography_Data_High_Resolution_Mosaics_April_15_2003_to_April_18_2003_Noel_Kempff_Mercado_Bolivia_Forest_Lianas

A repository for high-resolution videography image data collected for research described in Foster et al. (2008) Remote Sensing of Environment over Noel Kempff Mercado National Park Bolivia. The Nature Conservancy (TNC) contracted with Winrock International for acquisition of high resolution color-infrared aerial videography (CIR-AV) (Ranging from 10 cm, to 50 cm pixels, 0.5-km extent along-track, and 1-km swath width) (similar to Brown et al., 2005). These data were acquired during a field campaign from the 14th to the 18th of April in 2003. Areas within the aerial videography that corresponded to EO-1 Hyperion hyperspectral imagery and Landsat data were used to identify a sample of low-stature liana tangles and forests that guided mapping of liana forest patches. Low liana tangles were clearly distinguishable as homogenous areas of bright green vegetation among the more varied canopies of larger trees in the high-resolution CIR-AV images. Unlike other vegetation, liana canopies drape like a horizontal blanket over other vegetation, form columnar "towers" over emergent trees that cast distinctively columnar shadows, form linear linkages from one tree canopy to another and drape from high-canopy forest edges down to low-liana dominated patches. These videography image mosaics are being archived in the format provided by Winrock International, as either .TIF or .IMG raster files (ERDAS Imagine format) and associated metadata. When georeferencing information is available in the image header, the map projection is datum WGS84, UTM zone 20S. This archive contains image mosaics with the original names provided by Winrock International. The bulk of the original imagery is archived in the lab of Professor Phil Townsend at the University of Wisconsin. The subset of images archived here were retrieved off of CD or DVD in June 2019. Additional videography data may be added to this archive in the future from storage at the University of Wisconsin.<br>
