Mucus-Inspired Biomaterial for more effective drug release

Mucins are biopolymer that assemble to into mucus, the thin gel that covers our eyes, nose, mouth, stomach, intestins, lungs, and female reproductive tract. Mucins are sticky molecules that protect us from infections. We assembled mucins into a hydrogel that would stick to therapteutic molecules to delays their release. This work suggests that mucins could soon find interresting application in the biomedical fields and in others.
