The study took place at Field Trial B (CeFiT) at Campus Klein-Altendorf (North-Rhine-Westphalia), Germany. The aim was to characterize the potential of microorganisms to perform redox processes in three soil compartments in top (10-30 cm) and subsoil (60-75cm) , using whole metagenome shotgun sequencing. The focus was set to microbial community structure and genes involved in energy saving processes that are coupled to organic matter decomposition in rhizosphere, drilosphere and bulk soil.
