Blood microbiome signature associated with mortality in patients with sepsis

Sepsis is a life-threatening illness caused by dysregulated host response to infection. Nevertheless, our current knowledge on the microbial landscape in the blood of septic patients is still limited. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a sensitive method to quantitatively characterize micriobiome at various sites of human body. In this study, we analyzed the blood microbiome (bacteria, viruses, fungi and archaea) of 22 patients with sepsis (both culture-positive and -negative) and 3 healthy subjects by NGS.
