When the Atlas was conceived in 2008, I hoped that the maps may be also accompanied by illustrations, mainly frontispieces of relevant books and periodicals. I gathered some for several languages and countries, but the cost and the logistics of achieving a comprehensive coverage of the region stopped me in tracks. Afterward I also found out that publishers would not be ready to take on such illustrations, because the Atlas is more of a scholarly rather than popular work. However, not to let the work done go to waste, I decided to release the gathered illustrations on Pure for interested scholars and users to consult.
