Climatically Suitable Growth Areas for Eucalyptus smithii

Eucalyptus smithii which goes by the common name of Gully Gum produces a hard timber which is, however, only of moderate durability (Australiaplants, 2004). E. smithii is a fast grower, but is highly demanding of water, requiring a MAP > 850 m which has to be increased by 25 mm p.a. for every degree Celsius in excess of MAT = 15 degree Celsius (Schulze, 1997). This high rainfall species grows optimally at MAT 15 - 17 degree Celsius (Kunz, 2004) and moderately for MATs up to 19 degree Celsius (Herbert, 1993). January (hottest month) means of daily maximum temperatures should not exceed 28 degree Celsius while July (coldest month) daily minima should average > -2 degree Celsius.
