A random point at the edge of York University woodland was picked. To pick the random point a pseudorandom method was used. First 5 different spots along the edge of the woodland was chosen and assigned a number from 1 to 5. Next using a random number generator application set from 1 to 5 the spot that corresponded with the number that was generated via the application was chosen as the starting point. Starting from that point 25 meters of transect tape was pulled out and place on the floor, orientated towards the center of the woodlands. The investigator then walked along the 25 meter transect tape and took measurement of the first maple tree seen within 3 meters of the transect tape. The distance along the transect tape where the investigator spotted the first maple tree within 3 meters of the transect tape was recorded as the distance from the edge of the forest in meters. The DBH or diameter at breast height of the selected maple tree was taking in centimeters with another 25 meter transect tape and recorded. Next the distances from breast height of the selected tree to the breast height of the 3 nearest adult tree were taken in meters and recorded as D1, D2 and D3 respectively. The arithmetic mean of the 3 distances was determined and recorded as Dmean. The investigator then returned to the distance on the transect tape where he spotted the first maple tree and continued to walk along the transect tape until he spotted the next maple tree within 3 meters of the transect tape. When the next maple tree was spotted the same steps as above occurred until the investigators reached the end of the 25 meter transect tape. When the investigator reached the end of the 25 meter transect tape that constituted one sample. After the one sample was finished a different random point at the edge of York University woodland was chosen and the same steps occurred. This entire process was repeated until a sample of 30 was reached.
