VPRS 14294 Register of Purchases, Residential Areas

This series records purchases made of land in residence areas, initially under the Residence Areas Act 1884 and subsequent Acts such as the Land (Residence Areas) Act 1935.Details given in this series are the numbers of any correspondence (the registration of this correspondence may be seen in a wide number of series) or the file number, the name of the purchaser, the location and extent of the land, the amount paid and the date of payment.The Residence Areas Act 1884 amended earlier Acts to allow the purchase of land in auriferous (gold-bearing) areas. If persons had been resident upon land for two and one half years, had made substantial improvements and the land was not required for mining or public purposes, holders of registered Miners Rights might purchase that area at a price to be fixed by appraisement. This clause was reinforced by Section 36 of the Mines Act 1890 and Section 45 Mines Act 1915.Section 12 of the Land (Residence Areas) Act 1935 allowed for persons in residence areas on auriferous land to purchase the land which they were occupying. Conditions were that the holder had been in possession for at least two and a half years, that a habitable dwelling had been erected and that there was no objection to the alienation of the land.
