The aim of the proposed project is to provide 16s rRNA sequencing data analysis that will be of great value in the surveillance of respiratory pathogens within critically ill patients suffering from pneumonia at a intensive care unit (based at Addenbrookes hospital, Cambridge, UK). This study will enable monitoring of the changes within the respiratory microbiota of patients undergoing therapies and identify multi-drug resistant strains that present a heightened health risk to patients. This data will provide important information to the development of strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes, reducing the development of anti-microbial resistance and facilitating infection control measures in hospital.
