Annual report to the Atomic Energy Commission, 1972 Part 1 Atlantic Estuarine Fisheries Center annual report to the Atomic Energy Commission : a cooperative agreement between the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Atomic Energy Commission

This annual progress report marks the 22nd year of uninterruped interagency cooperative support: for our research on the distribution and movement of radioisotopes in estuarine ecosystems and the effects of environmental stresses, such as heat and radiation, on estuarine organisms. The first 21 years of this cooperative support were negotiated between the USAEC and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, however, so this report culminates the first complete year of research supported jointly by the USAEC and NOAA. It also represents the first full year of research effort under the present internal organization of staff, following two consecutive years of transition brought about first by the recombination of the Radiobiological and Biological Laboratories at Beaufort in July 1969 and then by the formation of NOAA in October 1970. Since our last report was submitted under the organizational heading of the Center for Estuarine and Menhaden Research, our Center has been officially renamed three times in rapid succession by NMFS, finally settling on our present title of Atlantic Estuarine Fisheries Center. Within that organization, we have established two Divisions: (1) Fisheries, under the direction of James Sykes; and (2) Ecology, which consists of the staff who conducted the research described in this report.
