The objective of this study was to investigate the spatial stratification of the bacterial communities and EPS in the electroactive biofilms of the bioelectrochemical (BES) under the stress of antibiotics in seawater. Metronidazole (MNZ) was used as a representative antibiotic in a single-chamber BES to evaluate its effect on the stratification of the bacteria communities and EPS in the EBs. The spatial stratifications of the bacteria communities and EPS were investigated using a freezing microtome method, high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and PICRUST functional prediction, providing insights into the mechanisms of MNZ removal from seawater in the BES.
